Gastronomy

Salobreña is a foodie’s paradise. It’s on the Costa Tropical, southern Spain’s little-touristed coastline still given to the traditional cultivation of mouth-watering fruits and vegetables that are the staples of the famed Mediterranean diet. Fruit cultivations range from breakfast-table staples such as oranges and lemons to exotic subtropical delights such as pineapple, mango, avocado, and cherimoya. Are you a fish lover? Buy freshly caught fish in the daily freshmarket (just a 10-minute walk from the apartment) and get to know the local fishmongers. My top recommendations for tasting: fresh sardines, anchovies, and mackerel. If you’ve never tried grilled fresh sardines … octopus skewered over barbecue coals for nine hours … or pescaditos fritos at the beachfront chiringuito … ah! You’re missing heaven: Walk down to the beach (1 minute) and get an inexpensive espeto de sardinas right away!
